The complete Christmas handbook!

After Thanksgiving is over, I love to snuggle up in a warm blanket with a warm drink and start planning for the Chritmas festivities. I'm always looking for new ideas to share with my family and Gooseberry Patch Christmas All Through the House is just jam packed with everything you could ever want to help you to make the holidays fun, festive and easy, too! It has more than 600 recipes, crafts, gift and decor ideas, with inspiring Christmas quotes, delightful illustrations and meaningful personal experiences scattered throughout.

There are recipes galore, from soup to nuts, which offer some excellent variations on your standard holiday fare. All of them are simple and homey and would certainly smell and taste wonderful to your friends and family when they come over to celebrate. The chapters in Christmas All Through the House cover the gamut from adorable kids crafts to delicious ways to use leftovers, like Turkey Walnut Salad, full of nuts and dried cranberries, a perfect, light lunch. Quick centerpiece ideas or how to present a lovely pair of earrings as a gift are a couple of the many helpful ideas.

Great Projects!

This books is very large and gives many great Christmas crafting and gift giving ideas. It also has lots of great recipes to share during the holidays. If you collect the Gooseberry Patch Christmas books each year, you may want to pass on it however because it is basically a sampling from several of the previous yearly books. It would be a great gift for a crafter that hasn't collected the yearly editions though and at a great price.

I love having these books as a resource for putting together a holiday meal. I also use the recipes throughout the year as my family is most receptive to them. I also refer to them throughout the year for ideas for hostess gifts or when I want to start preparing Christmas gifts ahead of time. I love all the Gooseberry Patch books I have seen and would own them all if I had the shelf space.

The BEST slow cooker cookbook that I own!

This cookbook is absolutely wonderful! It runs circles around the Betty Crocker slow cooker cookbooks. I've tried several recipes, including the oatmeal, pulled pork, and breakfast casserole recipes, and they were all fantastic. This book contains a huge variety of recipes for everything from breakfast to dessert, but it does not scrimp on great dinner recipes. My life is so much easier now that I've re-discovered my slow cooker and this cookbook! Great variety of recipes, great pictures, and beautiful!

Recipes OK, But Not Convenient for Working Mom

Since I went back to working full time, I thought, "hey, what a great opportunity to really use my crockpot." So I bought this cookbook, banking on the Southern Living name. The recipes are OK, but there are way too many that require you to cook at high for 1 hour, then switch to low for 4 hours, etc. These are mostly meat dishes. Others say cook the first 5 ingredients for 3 hours, then add such & such and continue cooking for 2 more hours. Well, if I'm at work, how am I supposed to switch the temperature or add ingredients? Even the "programmable" crockpots won't let you change temps after x number of hours. And the book tells you that to avoid the temperature change, you can brown the meat first, etc. Well, when I'm trying to get ready for work and get three kids ready for school and daycare at 6:30 in the morning, what I really DON'T need is to have to precook my crockpot meal. The beauty of the thing is that you're supposed to throw everything in and let it go all day (not 4-5 hrs) and then it's done when you come home. These recipes need too much attention.

Just more dumb crock-pot recipes that rely on one packaged product after another being dumped in. Why would I want to use a whole bottle of BBQ sauce in a recipe?

Where is the book that uses fresh ingredients, mixed together in a sensible (and maybe slightly creative??) way, simmers them together in the crock pot during the course of the day, resulting in an easy - and HEALTHY - meal? This book is NOT it!

Lovely Book with Great Recipes

This is a nice Christmas inspired book by Southern Living. This book has so much amazing Christmas inspired photos that one could say that this book is actually a "picture book," but this book is more than that. It's also a story book about Christmas and what Christmas is like in the South. And the other great thing about this book is that there are lots of actual menus of meals. I haven't tried the recipes yet, but a lot of them look amazing, and they don't look too complicated to make. Here is how the recipes are organized in the book - as you go through the book there are lists of menus with amazing photos of the food, appetizers, desserts, and drinks. Then at the back of the book, the menus are re-listed with all of the actual recipes following - so they are all in one place. It's too bad that Amazon doesn't have a "look inside the book" option so that you can see how amazing this book is. Some of the recipes that caught my attention is the "Caramel Drop Banana Bread Trifle Dessert," "Pecan Bourbon Balls," "Orange Thing Punch," "Arugula Pear Blue Cheese Salad," "Gingerbread Soufflé," "Sparkling Cranberry Cider," "Caramel Apple Cider," "Spiced Sorghum Snowflakes Cookies," "Pecan Cornbread," "Honey Rosemary Cherries and Blue Cheese Crostini," "Pecan Soup," "Savory Bacon and Leek Bread Pudding," and "Lemon Glazed Fried Cherry Pies." Of course, these are only some of the recipes, but there are much more in the book. There is also an entire section for Christmas Cakes with all of those recipes as well. One of those recipes is for a peppermint cheesecake. And, here is an example of one of the menus that are provided in this book: Menu for "A Merry Christmas Eve Dinner": Classic Eggnog, Honey Rosemary Cherries and Blue Cheese Crostini, Spice Rubbed Smoked Turkey Breast with Mushroom Gravy, Pecan Cornbread, Butternut Squash Casserole with Pecan Streusel, Crumb Topped Spinach Casserole, Cranberry Clementine Relish, and White Chocolate Peppermint Mouse Pie. All together there are 11 menus with full recipes in this book, and each menu comes with anywhere from 6 to 11 recipes. So, overall you are getting a lot of recipes here. You can't go wrong with this book and I think that it would make a lovely gift as well. And lastly this book is big! It's 400 pages.

I LOVE THIS BOOK! I enjoy the little one page essays. The essay on decorating the family tree had me laughing so hard I was crying....it's like he channeled our family Christmas tree tradition. Beautiful pictures, as always. Don't know that I saw any recipes I'd necessarily make, but I consider this a book to just sit down and get lost in and enjoy.

This is an excellent book comprised of ALL the recipes in preceding year in the Southern Living magazine. While the articles and pictures are great in the magazine, the recipe book is almost to die for! So many recipes ... and all good! I have not missed the annual recipes in years!

This is an excellent book, and combines depth of theory with many practical applications of the presented ideas. The chapters dealing with robotics and image processing applications are very illustrative of the presented ideas. I wished there were more books like this in other areas.

Lovely Presentation

I purchased this as a gift for my mom, but couldn't resist taking a peek inside before wrapping it up. The book is lovely, cover to cover. Chock full of bright pictures and catchy articles to draw you in, but still maintaining clean lines to facilitate a good read - quick or extended, an easy choice with the way the book is divided. That's why I think it's a perfect gift for someone on the go - the book is easy to pick up and put down when time allows, so as not to intimidate the reader who may prefer to take in pages in one sitting, rather than chapters. I recommend it for anyone who likes the show, or needs a variety of positive reading material all bound in one cover!

Illuminating snapshots of life

Many people are familiar with the story "The Lottery," but it is just one of many incredible vignettes of life filling this collection. It is hard to understand today why "The Lottery" originally provoked such a strong reaction, yet it still packs a punch for first-time readers. While it does have aspects of horror, the remaining stories are basically literary. "Flower Garden" and "After You, My Dear Alphonse" deal with racism and would seem to be pretty bold statements for the time period (the book was published in 1948); the latter story seems particularly groundbreaking because of the unusual perspective it provides. "Charles" is a humorous yet illuminating look at the behavior of children, while "Afternoon in Linen" is an important statement on why children sometimes behave as they do. Jackson is at her best when describing the disenchanted adult. The helplessness of women is an important theme in many stories; many of the women described here feel helpless and subservient to their husbands, their neighbors, and their community. "Elizabeth" is a fairly long study of how one woman's wishes and dreams remain unfulfilled in later life. The housewife in "Got a Letter From Jimmy" is thoroughly exasperated by her husband's feelings, and since she cannot speak her mind to him, she is forced to fantasize about killing him. In "The Villager" a woman spontaneously chooses to become someone else entirely for a few minutes, and most of Jackson's heroines spend much time contemplating what could have been. In "Of Course," the fact that a new family has a few unorthodox views builds an unbreachable wall between brand-new neighbors. The women in these stories are always wondering what other people think about them and worrying about what others will say about them. Even when a group of women try to do something good to help the less fortunate, it backfires on them in "Come Dance With Me in Ireland." When a female character vacations with her husband in New York in "Pillar of Salt," she soon becomes "lost," afraid, and desperate to return home. "Colloquy" is the shortest story in the collection, but its protagonist speaks for most of Jackson's female characters when she asks whether she alone or the whole world has gone insane.

My favorite story here is "The Daemon Lover." Herein, Jackson offers one of the most poignant, touching looks at loneliness, desperation, and fragility I have ever read. In the story, we spend a day with the protagonist as she prepares for her wedding, having become engaged just the night before to a James Harris. It is a depressing yet beautiful story, and I actually rate it higher than "The Lottery." The character of James Harris actually flitters throughout several of these stories, a phantom of sorts haunting several of Jackson's more memorable female characters.

Jackson deals with very serious subjects, and the illumination provided by her unusual perspectives on life is vivid and poignant. When addressing racism, she shows how even an individual with the best of intentions and good will can still represent an unfortunate racist attitude. In speaking to morality and social values, she shows how hard it can be for an individual to go against tradition and the community to do what is right. She offers powerful insights on child (and adult) psychology. Even the couple of stories I did not really "get" offered insight into the living of life. Readers should not expect a book of horror stories when they pick up this book. The stories can be maudlin and even depressing, but they are philosophical, psychological, and sociological rather than creepy or spooky.

Hallowed Traditions

"The Lottery" is a powerful work of literature and the best short story I ever read. When first published in the "New Yorker" in 1948, it engendered an enormous amount of hate mail; some readers actually canceled their subscriptions. Although now commonly regarded as a masterpiece of short fiction, Jackson's macabre work is still so greatly abhorred by some contemporary readers that they have attempted to get it banned from their local libraries. Indeed, a relacement copy I donatated just quietly disappeared from mine. Why? The few readers I have polled were quick to label the story "terrible" but seemed strangely reluctant to pinpoint their objections; so I can only surmise. I believe the story makes people nervous because they perceive that the community in which the lottery was held is really not all too different from their own. I think Jackson drives home the point that we, too, live in a society rife with superstition and ignorance -- a culture in which ancient traditions are unquestioningly accepted and virtually anyone can suddenly find themselves chosen as a sacrificial offering to an unseen god. When readers see themselves in the role of the ill-fated Mrs. Hutchinson, besieged by a mindless mob of true-believers, they are justifiably terrified. Or could it be that some readers are troubled because they sense in themselves a strong impulse to pick up a stone?

Buy it for "The Lottery," fall in love with the rest as well

If you've never read "The Lottery," you're wasting valuable time reading this review. Go buy the book and read it instead. If you have read "The Lottery," then odds are you already appreciate this dark, brilliant, horrific little story. It's one of the greatest horror stories ever written, and it's one of my favorites of all time to teach, as well. My students were all shocked and horrified by the story (not least by the fact that I would give them something that so offended them), but by the end of the semester, they came to love the story. The set-up is brilliant, and the twist ending is perfect: brutal, shocking, and short. Other reviewers have commented on the story's excellence for teaching things like the evil of tradition; it's also an excellent way to teach how ordinary people could become involved in something like the Nazi death camps.
The rest of the stories in the collection are uniformly excellent, as well, although I would recommend saving "The Lottery" for last. It's by far the most horrific in the collection, but Jackson's satire can be just as brutal as her horror, and there is more than a little of the horror of everyday life sprinkled throughout the rest of these tales. A must-buy!
