About the Author
Elizabeth de Beauchamp Goudge was born on April 24th 1900 in Wells, Somerset, where her father was Principal of Wells Theological College. Although she had privately intended writing as a career, her parents insisted she taught handicrafts in Oxford. She began writing in her spare time and her first novel ISLAND MAGIC, set in Guernsey, was a great success here and in America. GREEN DOLPHIN COUNTRY (1944) projected her to fame, netting a Literary Guild Award and a special prize of GBP30,000 from Louis B. Mayer of MGM before being filmed. In her later years Elizabeth Goudge settled in Henley-on-Thames. She died on April 1st, 1984.

Gentian Hill converted to e-book

The book was not one of Goudges' best works. It was a bit on the dark side in the beginning but it improved and in the end I was happy with it. What I was not happy with was Amazon's conversion into Kindle format. It was basically scanned and put into their format with no editing or correction of optical recognition errors. There were words that were converted wrong and formatting was screwed up all throughout. It made the book more difficult to read.

No one writes better than Elizabeth Goudge, NO ONE.

There was NEVER a book written by Elizabeth Goudge that wasn't outstanding. Pick a book, any book written by her and you will became an instant fan and not happy till you have found and read them all. The very best is The White Witch. Green Dolphin Street, The Deans Watch, are a close second. My mother read to our family most nights after dishes were done. When she died I inherited the books she had, my children and grandchildren will enjoy them long after I'm gone. They're that good.

Another beautiful book by Elizabeth Goudge.

Every book a I read by Elizabeth Goudge seems to me to be the best she has written. Now Gentian Hill is added to one of my favorites. The characters, the settings, the historical backdrop all make it a beautiful story. Even a bit of magical fantasy added in. I loved every page! It is another of her books I highly recommend!
