It will be an invaluable help to people with an interest in forensic science. As this book says, it's an introduction on "scientific and investigative techniques" but don't be fooled, the detail is immense and the book is superbly laid out. Clear diagrams, photos and graphs are well placed to help the reader further understand what they are taking in. The text it's self is easy to follow and friendly to read and the concepts are well explained. What I especially like about this book are the questions at the end of each section (nothing formidable) and the case studies and examples that further help to emphasize the points being put across.

5 Stars Excellent, Purely Academic, Scientific

While I am using this book for a graduate level introductory course in forensic science, this book is simple and clear enough for undergraduate. In fact, I would venture to say it could also be used for high school level as the previous reviewer had mentioned.

This is not to say that this book is not good enough for a graduate level introductory course. Importantly, it is quite comprehensive (look at the table of contents) and covers a plethora of topics in forensic science that are all lucidly explained by the authors. If one is for instance writing a step-by-step guide to basic CSI, this book could be cited as a reference easily as it explains each step pretty thoroughly for the basics. My adviser won a very prestigious education award in this field, and if it is good enough for him, I believe it would be good enough for your program as well.

As a 10th year college student, I recommend it for not only the reasons I'd already mentioned, but also because it is one of the highest-quality textbooks I've studied for professionally accomplishing the purposes intended. (At this level, having experienced the worst of academic smugness and textbook fallacy that comes with it, I appreciate that this book is scientific, no-nonsense, no awful left-wing agenda, no errors). Again, students can easily use this as reference material in coursework.

This is a superb book...for junior high or high school students. Yes, it is easy to read, but I found the highlighted words in the text (to indicate they are in the glossary) to be a nuisance. The authors over-simplify everything and attempt to encompass too many areas of the broad field, so it will only be of use to readers who have never seen CSI or know absolutely nothing about forensic science. Saferstein's introductory book on forensic science would be a better choice for your money.

Recipies Like Mother Used to Make

Even though this is the 2006 edition, myfavorite recipie is repeated from 2001, Chicken-Fried Steak. Not only is this my fvorite food, but it was a staple in southern Louisiana where I grew up, and in my Grandmothers house in Texas. Good chicken-fried steak is hard to find. Usually it's pan fried instead and greasy and mushy. Not this one, it's breading is crisp, crunchy, and spicy.

I also notice that their Cheese Grits (two varieties) use quick-cooking grits (bad idea) but then say you can use stone-ground if desired and increase cook time to 50 minutes. Most places don't even mention stone ground grits (oh so much better) and if they do they forget to mention that they cook slower. Unless you're extremely lucky you'll have to order these through the mail - I use Bob's Red Mill.

These are magnificant books. Not only do they give you some very good ideas about how to entertain for the holidays, but they also have several decorating ideas. This year it seems that the decorations are more home made than before, so there is really no reason not to have them.

If you have one of these books, you want them all, here's 2006.

Unexpected gift

I purchased this book for an 82 year old friend of mine. She always received this book from Southern Living every year since 1972. This is the first year she did not receive one from them. When she told me this I knew I had to purchase it for her. I went to several bookstores and decided to purchase it from Amazon. Needless to say this book made my 82 year old friend extemely happy. I know I will be borrowing it from her to try some of the fabulous recipes myself.

I recommend stronlgy to purchase this book, if you are new on PAM this text book is a great reference, the autors will guide you with updated concepts in order to acquire the excellence for maintenance, also talks about PAS55, but prior to get into PAS55, please read this book, it will set you the strong basis and ideas for long term goals like PAS55.

Compared to other Mechatronics books I've read, this one has a lot of depth. It goes into a wide variety of subjects, but they're treated with enough detail that these concepts can be reapplied.

Good book on design & analysis for the engineer

Mechatronics represents a process that blends mechanics and electronics with use of precision engineering, computer science, information technology, control system theory, and sensor and actuator technology to design improved products and processes. This book, unlike many in the field, is aimed at upper level undergraduate engineers, not hobbyists or technicians. Therefore a certain amount of mathematical maturity is required. The objectives of this book are:

1. Mathematical modeling of physical systems

2. Building a common set of differential equations of electrical and mechanical systems.

3. Engineering analysis of integrated mechatronics systems in time and frequency domain.

4. Application of integrated modelng and instrumentation techniques to design and analyze an industrial mechatronic system.

This text offers up tutorials on dynamic system modeling, electronic components and analysis, mechanical components and analysis, robotics, sensors/transducers and instrumentation, stepper motors, dc and ac motors and drives, hydraulic and pneumatic actuators, fluidics, automatic control, digital processing and hardware, communication and interfacing, software tools, design, and prototyping. However, it does not pretend to be a definitive textbook on any of these subjects. Instead, it assumes the reader has a previous exposure to all of these subjects but has not seen how to design a unified system using all of these types of devices and disciplines. There are plenty of examples, figures, and equations throughout the book, and the mathematics should not be difficult for any upper level undergraduate engineer to grasp. The final chapter shows some case studies in Mechatronics design which includes the obvious- a robot design. The appendices provide additional background on Laplace and Fourier transform techniques, and software tools including MATLAB, SIMULINK, and LabVIEW. The book emphasizes practical situations and applications with numerous worked examples, problems, and exercises. I highly recommend it to students of mechanical and electrical engineering who want to learn to design with a unified outlook on these two fields.

This book suits well to educational purposes at the university level. It has really wide material collected into one book, which makes it easier for the students and saves their time. If reviewed from the educational point of view, the book deserves four stars.

The book works also as a reference book for engineers and researchers, although for more serious research purposes there are books that go deeper in some specific areas.

Excellent collection of (IT) Project Management papers

There are two things prospective readers need to know about this book: (1) it is focused in IT and software development project management, and (2) it is not a 'how to' book.
This is a collection of papers on advanced project management topics that experienced IT project managers will find enlightening and up-to-date with respect to techniques. The papers are divided into the following six topic areas:(1) Essential Concepts of Project Management, (2) Critical Factors for Project Quality, (3) Managing Business Relationships, (4) Effectively Managing Outsourced Projects, (5) Managing Special Projects and (6) Measuring and Improving Project Management Success.
What I like is that the book does not focus solely on software development projects, but covers areas that will interest project managements in infrastructure, oursourcing management and other IT functions. I also liked the following papers that address concerns of PMs from a larger perspective: "SEI CMM or ISO 9000: Which Is Right for Your Organization? ", "Incorporating Six Sigma Concepts into Systems Analysis" and "Managing Development in the Era of Large Complex Systems". In addition, there are many papers that address concerns common to all IT project managers, regardless of their functional area, including: "Business and IT: Developing Strategic Alliances", "Creating and Implementing a Balanced Measurement Program" and "Ten Ways to Improve Project Performance".
IT project managers will benefit greatly from the information presented in this book. It should be a part of any PMO library, and every consulting firm should have a copy available to its project managers.

DO NOT PURCHASE THIS BOOK -- PLEASE READ THIS REVIEW

This book was one of the worst books I've ever purchased in my 16 years of technology and I urge you NOT to spend your money on it. 99% of the book has NOTHING to do with cost management.
Being that the authors are with Price Waterhouse Coopers - they mention the topic of outsourcing more than 48 times in the first chapter alone. It felt a lot more like a sales pitch for their consulting company than any other book I've read. It became so repetitive and annoying that I was praying the book would get better.
It is rare to find a series of thoughts that have any real meaning throughout this entire book. Almost every paragraph is bulleted lists of ideas. It's like reading a book that is a terrible Powerpoint presentation on just about every page. I cannot remember when the author had more than three paragraphs in a row let alone paragraphs that were dedicated to the title of the book.
The constant bulleted items are extremely nebulous thoughts that serve to state obvious facts rather than specifics. Anyone that is looking for material on specifics about cutting costs around their telecommunications environment will find themselves getting very angry trying to get anything meaningful from this book. The book hardly covers cost management whatsoever. The author just decides we need yet another book to cover all the different telecom technologies from frame relay, ATM, to VSAT et al. Clearly this book does NOT live up to its title.
While the book looks to be rather thick with information, the actual content is around 120 pages (at best). The remaining pages in the book are various appendixes with totally nebulous things such as a glossary of telecom terms, lists of website links, other people's white papers, etc.. I'm positive that the publishing house added these things because they saw how small the amount of content was in here and wanted a "fatter" book.
I've purchased well over 200 books around technology, and this book is second from the bottom. I'm actually contemplating writing a letter to the publishing house demanding my money back.
DO NOT PURCHASE THIS BOOK.

Great Tactical Telecom Cost Management Book

Telecommunications Cost Management provides a tactical approach to telecom cost reduction. Not only do the authors provide easy to follow steps for executing a telecom cost management project, but they also provide useful tools such as templates, checklists and project plans to make the journey less daunting. The authors do a really good job of drilling down on the key aspects of VoIP, telecom security and satellite communications without a lot of technical jargon.
This is an excellent book and I highly recommend it to anyone responsible for managing his or her company's telecom spend or anyone consulting in the telecom cost management space.

Practical How To Book - not 50,000 foot theory

Our firm is in cost cutting mode, so I got this book looking for practical tips on how to cut our considerable telecom bill. What I liked was the step-by-step approach covering local, long distance and alternative technologies. Instead of a lot of theory, it gets down to USOCs and has a checklist of specific savings ideas. The audit program at the back rambled at bit but had plenty of detail. The book throws in some useful "shovelware" at the back too -- sample RFPs, contracts, things to look for in a good contract, etc. Defintely worth the money.

Love this Cookbook!

Anything Real Simple Magazine prints is good, from decorating to clearing out clutter. BUT the Cookbooks are the Best! These recipes feature
beautiful, bold photographs so you can see what you're hungry for. Moreover, the recipes are easy and absolutely delicious. No Martha Stewart
complicated, long-winded, directions in these cookbooks. Just wonderful cooking.

I checked this book out from the library and there were so many recipes that I wanted to try that I decided to buy it. I love the magazine and the recipes are good.
