Great Cookbook for Low Fat Recipes, Somewhat Pricey

This is a very nice little cookbook, with lots of good recipes and great illustrations. I've made many of the recipes and have been pleased with the results. Given the size of the cookbook and number of recipes you get, however, it is a little pricey.

Perfect!

I keep reaching for this book again and again. The photos are gorgeous and everything looks so good! The Pasta with Roasted Butternut Squash and Shallots on page 58 is one of my favorites. I could probably eat this a few times a week. It's that good! Also, don't expect to get only Italian pasta recipes. There are also many Asian dishes and even salads.

If this book is any reflection of the other Cooking Light books, I plan to get the rest of the collection!

The text provides excellent introduction into the crime of money laundering...very easy to understand and at times comical. Although the book is a bit dated, its concepts remain the same and I would recommend this text for anyone interested in understanding the role of money laundering.

An excellent nuts and bolts introduction.

As a Canadian police officer, I picked up this book expecting to find its understandable American focus to be of limited use to me. Instead I was very surprised. Yes it is entirely American in focus and reference, but its explanation of laundering methodologies - and weaknesses - was exceptionally straight forward and of universal application. I was able to apply several aspects immediately to an existing international investigation of commercial fraud.
It is in its explanations that the book is strongest. These are simply written, without jargon. For example, using the analogy of Al Capone's enterprises, it gives the best and simplest description of a balance sheet and financial statement and what goes into their makeup that I have ever seen. When this began I was suspicious that the Capone analogy was going to have to be stretched beyond any usefulness, but this turned out not to be the case at all. In fact, the analogy gave the explanations life and character.
Its outline of resources, to consider was equally direct and useful, even to a Canadian investigation.

I collect cookbooks -- lots and lots of cookbooks. My favorite genre is the modest, spiral-bound collections by local churches and community organizations. They provide not only some wonderful "real" recipes, but reveal such a friendly window into the local traditions and communities themselves.Thus, I was excited to get my hands on this Community Cookbook by Southern Living which is meant to cull some of the best recipes and features from those little local gems. Scattered throughout this book are a number of side-bar "chats" concerning interesting related topics and hints, and a good array of "real" Southern recipes from real Southern cooks. Five stars for that. An effort was made to recreate the neighborly quality of the originals. The graphics and page lay-outs are cute and unpretentious, but in my opinion there's too much emphasis on the graphic design and not nearly enough on the readability of the text itself. Someone was really wedded to the "optics" of the book -- and it succeeds in offering an artistic vintage "feel". But a cookbook is of little practical use if one cannot easily read the recipes. That seems a fairly obvious concept, but in this case, I believe it was often overlooked in favor of artsy typescript and spidery fonts. A multiplicity of different font types is used throughout the book (some which are meant to look like script, suggesting a hand-written recipe -- cute, but not clear). Also,the pages are printed in different pastel colors -- very pretty -- but some of these background colors make the type even harder to discern. In strong natural light, there isn't a big problem with the type, but in a real dinner-time scenario with the book sitting on the counter and artificial light and shadows from cabinets factored in, it's frustratingly hard to read. I have good eyesight and do not need to wear prescription glasses, but I cannot easily refer to some of these recipes without moving the book to a direct light source or grabbing the pair of magnifier glasses I keep around for detailed work. And that is not appreciated by a busy cook -- at least, not by this one. In fact, this is so annoying a problem to me that what should be a favorite "go-to" resource has been significantly reduced in its usefulness to me. 1 star, then, for the poor print. As to the recipes themselves, they do represent a nice variety of the old and new. There are a few really stellar recipes included, such as Gumbo Z' Herbes and Crook's Corner Shrimp and Grits, (both chef-submitted recipes,) and believe me, they are absolutely awesome! There are also a number of predictable and somewhat-tired standards present, like Pimento Cheese, banana pudding, and congealed salads -- recipes that one will find in any and every self-respecting southern cookbook. On the other hand, there are also some newer variations on traditional themes, like Hoppin' John Salad and Slow Cooker Pork and Pinto Chalupas. Further, there is a sprinkling of recipes that reflect the vibrant, changing demographics and cultural sharing of the New South; for example, Tempura Dill Pickles and West Indies Salad. 4 stars for the array of recipes. Like all of Southern Living's productions, the photography is first-rate --absolutely luscious -- another 5 stars for that. I'd have preferred more photos (or even more recipes -- there is a treasure-trove of good cooking in those little spiral cookbooks upon which to draw material) -- and far less of the cuteness. Overall, then, I'm settling on 3 1/2 stars. There are some really good aspects to this book but the readabiity issue is a major drawback for me. I hope any future editions will rectify that problem.

Gorgeous book with really interesting and fun recipes

This book is GORGEOUS inside! The recipes are fun and many are easy to throw together; some do require planning. The photos give you an idea of what your dish may look like if you follow the instructions. Of course my dishes have never actually looked like the ones in the book but whatever ..... It is a perfect gift for yourself or someone else. I'm giving this to my mother-in-law for Christmas and then inviting my family over to her house for dinner.

Kudos to Southern Living

This is a fun book to peruse of recipes from community cookbooks. The author apparently read every recipe published by Southern Living and pulled together a representative collection from the community cookbook genre. The illustrations are whimsical and appealing. And the recipes, while published before, are in an easy to read and use format. Nice gift book, too. Kudos to Southern Living for a nice addition to their collection!

I'm in that GOOD MOOD promised by the title...LOL

I decided that a Cooking Light book may be pretty good so I ordered this. To my surprise, it turned out better than expected. Cooking times are a little off but you must have some cooking know-how to use the book, like 30 minutes to roast butternut squash simply isn't enough even at 425 degrees, you must know it takes an hour or so to do, where the book advises 30 mins.!! I cooked up the butternut squash-spinach lasagna and it was a delight. I"ll be trying the stuffed peppers and eggplant roll ups along the way this week, I hope, I bought the stuff to make them anyhow. I would recommend this book highly to the experienced cook due to the weird cooking times that are way off base. Really nice collection of recipes for the finicky eater. I'm feeding a finicky 84 year old, who is diabetic too and she's loved it so far.

Run-to-Run Control in Semiconductor Manufacturing

Having only recently gained significant acceptance in the semiconductor industry, run-to-run (R2R) control has been shown to be a highly effective method for minimizing the influence of systematic variations on the performance of semiconductor manufacturing equipment. Consequently, this book should prove to be a timely and welcome addition to the library of any manufacturing technologist in the semiconductor industry. Intended for use by novices as well as experts, it covers both the theory and application of R2R control in the semiconductor industry. Written by contributors from both industry and academia, the book is organized into seven topical sections. For the benefit of readers new to the subject, each section is arranged so that the first few chapters in the section are introductory in nature.
The book begins with an historical overview of process control in the semiconductor industry and the reasons why R2R control has emerged as one of the key process control technologies in use in the industry today. The rest of the section traces the evolution of R2R control in the semiconductor industry, including the barriers to its implementation and the enabling technologies that have helped to overcome these barriers, and provides a brief introduction to R2R control and process optimization methods.
The second section of the book focuses on control algorithms and the application of these algorithms to R2R process optimization and control. Particular attention is paid to R2R algorithms based on the exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA) statistic such as the "gradual mode" and the "predictor-corrector" controllers. A significant advantage of these EWMA algorithms is that they are relatively easy to implement and they have been shown to work well for a variety of applications in the semiconductor industry. The rest of the section is devoted to several adaptive algorithms that can be used for both process optimization and control. The last chapter compares the performance of the R2R algorithms discussed in the previous chapters under a variety of conditions for both linear and non-linear processes. It should prove quite helpful to anyone trying to evaluate R2R control strategies.
The third section addresses the role of integration and automation in implementing R2R control in manufacturing environments. These are key enablers for R2R control and, as the authors note, if careful consideration is not given to them when implementing R2R control systems the solutions developed could turn out to be too costly or cumbersome to be useful. Because integration and automation span such a wide domain of technologies and disciplines, standards are absolutely vital to its success. Fortunately the first chapter in this section provides a thorough review of integration and automation standards that have been developed and proposed by organizations like SEMATECH, SEMI, and SIA. The subsequent chapters in this section address specific implementations of R2R control and the integration and automation strategies used with these implementations. A minor criticism of this section is the emphasis in these chapters on the Generic Cell Controller (GCC), although it should be noted that the authors have a wealth of experience with the application of the GCC to R2R control. The remaining sections of the book cover case studies of the application of R2R control to specific semiconductor manufacturing processes like Chemical Mechanical Polishing (CMP) and photolithography and advanced topics such as methods for dealing with process upsets and control strategies that span multiple process technologies. The book concludes with a discussion of the future of R2R control in semiconductor manufacturing and suggestions for further reading which are in addition to the thorough list of references included at the end of each chapter of the book.
In conclusion, this book is a very useful reference for any manufacturing technologist in the semiconductor industry. It provides a good introduction to the basics of R2R control and illustrates its application to semiconductor manufacturing with specific examples and case studies based on the authors personal experiences.

Run-to-Run Control Explained

Run-to-Run (R2R) control is a process control technique for batch-processing environments in which an algorithm is used to adjust process parameters prior to each batch (run). Information from previous runs, prior process inputs, or environmental information might all play a part in the control algorithm. The authors make a convincing point that run-to-run control has been very successful and has widespread application in the semiconductor industry, and is, in fact, "the least equipment-invasive control scheme that demonstrates real benefit."
This book is not a loose collection of case studies or a group of unrelated articles; it is, rather, a complete and integrated treatment of the subject of run-to-run control in its present state of development. The technical content exhibits the benefit of years of research through [the semiconductor research consortium] Sematech and excellent scholarship with over 300 references included. Both the theory of run-to-run control and the realities of implementation in modern manufacturing environments are covered.

This is one EXCELLENT book!!

The function of a review, to me, at least, is to help the reader decide whether or not to shell out the dinero to buy it. This a a very worthwhile addition to one's BBQ cookbook shelf, featuring tons of excellent recipies, as well as other information relating to 'que, which I will summarize below.

As to the recipies, the title is a little bit deceptive; not enough to diminish the five star rating, but the recipies do not all concern themselves with the traditional "low & slow" cooking technique that we associate with true barbeque. There are many recipies that are more grilling, such as steaks, chops and burgers, and some are actually for (shudder!!) indoor cooking, in whole or in part. The reason that the rating was not decreased by this, is that the recipies end up with good results, regardless of the cooking technique. These recipies range all the way from appetizers to desserts and there are sections dedicated to rubs, sauces marinades, flavored butters, etc. And there are, of course, recipies for the barbeque essentials, brisket, pork shoulder and ribs... and there are several of each.

The "extras" in this book are several: there are listings of recommended "barbeque joints" in pretty much all the Southern States; there are descriptions, including contact info, for the major competitions, such as Memphis in May, as well as regional and local events. The photographs are many and excellent, but, unfortunately, most are not captioned, so we don't know who the folks depicted are.

The interest in Barbeque is a recent phenomenon: when I started cooking over fire about fifty (gasp!!) years ago, books like this did not exist. Barbeque was a largely unknown thing, except in the South, and learning how to cook various foods over live fire was a "catch as catch can" thing. The equipment, such as it was, was pretty primitive, too. Nowadays, we have sophisticated grills and pits and a whole lot of books, some good and some not so, to help the novice, as well as the experienced cook to produce consistantly good food for family and friends. This book is a very worthwhile addition to the literatue, and I'm glad to have it.

On a personal note, I often get a sense of continuity with the past when I cook outside, and, with 'que, particularly, a sense of participating in the genuine American native cuisine. There's a neat sense of patriotism there, and I like it.

BEST BBQ BOOK EVER

I collect BBQ books, I have some very good BBQ books, but this book I truly believe is the best book in my collection. Pictures are outstanding; I can't wait to try the potato salad. This book isn't full of different ways to fix one particular cut of meat, it looks like they just printed the best of the best ways to prepare. Buy this book, you won't regret it.

I picked this book up about 2 weeks ago and have made 4 of the recipes to rave reviews from my discriminating family. Like many passionate grillers, I have a couple of dozen recipe books. This book distingushes itself by containing simple recipes that take so little prep time, yet produce such unique flavors.

Every recipe book should elicit accolades from at least 20-25% of its dishes. I have a hunch that percentage might be higher with this book. And the chef appreciates the short prep time as well.
