Great basic recipes, but mostly variations on a theme

It does have the classic Mrs. Field's cookie recipes, which is what I was looking for. However, a lot of recipes seemed to be variations on a theme. Substituting butterscotch chips for chocolate chips doesn't a new recipe make.

The World's Best Dishes, in Your Kitchen

I was fortunate enough to receive an early copy of this book, so I've already cooked two things from it and have mentally dog-earred a whole bunch more. I started with the Beef and Guinness Stew because, well, St. Patty's Day is coming and it was Sunday when I was cooking. While I was at it, I did the Brown Soda bread, which has a couple of nice nutritional twists to it and was hands down the best brown soda bread I've made, ever--and I've made easily a hundred of them. Unsurprisingly, as Joachim is a total pro, these recipes work; I actually halved the stew recipe with no problem and it was hearty and satisfying. The layout and design are fresh, inviting and colorful, and the tone is laid-back, friendly, and generous. It's a compendium of the world's best, signature dishes, rendered in a creative way with some twists and turns, from the Cooking Light magazine archives, plus quite a few brand new recipes along with tips from the world's top chefs, restaurateurs, and cookbook authors.

Foolproof

This book is amazing - huge variety of recipes, including a nice percentage of vegetarian options, all incredibly flavorful and close to the traditional cooking of each region. So far I have made the steamed pork buns (with portobello and water chestnuts instead of pork), steamed gyoza, shrimp stir fry, and the Ethiopian recipe for pasta with potatoes and arugula (can't remember the name). There are a lot of spices involved, so be prepared to stock up the pantry, but the result is incredible food (and leftovers). The book itself is really well-made: full-color detailed photographs of very dish, solid binding, and thick glossy pages. One of the rare cooking books where I just might make every recipe.

Delicious

So far I have only made one recipe from this book, Dak Bokkeum. It was delicious. I used a little less sesame oil, since it has such a distinctive flavor, and the meal came out just right. I have a couple of Korean friends and they say that the recipe sounds legit. I will definitely be trying more recipes as I find time.

I have really enjoyed this book. The colorful pictures are gorgeous! With help from this book I have created more space in my home. I have been able to store the items I use most in a way that looks beautiful and I have easy access to those items. The books also look great displayed in my living room! My company frequently asks if they can take a look at the book!

Beautiful Photos - an inspirational book

I love looking at the Pottery Barn Catalog, both for the furniture and the style/inspiration that comes along with it.

This book is an extension of the catalog (some pictures are exactly from the catalog) but it adds interesting highlights, helps with color choices (such as suggesting paint chips) and gives expert tips at organizating (I found the best ones to be for closets and the laundry room.)

Obviously they promote their merchandise, but who wouldn't? It is absolutely gorgeous!

Overall, a good read with beautiful photos and interesting tidbits.

A knavish speech sleeps in a foolish ear

"All it does is tell you to buy the stuff at Pottery Barn and how to use it - like we don't already know how to use a bookcase?? Don't waste your money."
Well that's all well and fine if you're the Candice Olsen of stylish living. I know how to use a bookcase but how to arrange a variety of items on one that is both practical and visually appealing is more the mystery. I have a eclectic movie memorabilia collection as well as many dvds, cds and books. This book showed me how I could create a media enviroment to store and display my collection while keeping it organized and simple. The book also provides good and basic advice on layering textures and using colour effectively.
So if you like the Pottery Barn style and haven't reached the title of domestic god or goddess then I do recommend this book and all titles in the Pottery Barn series. =)

Recipe from the book: Tuscan Pork Chopsprep: 10 min.     cook: 10 min. 1/4 cup all-purpose flour1 teaspoon salt3/4 teaspoon seasoned pepper4 (1-inch thick) boneless pork chops1 tablespoon olive oil3 to 4 garlic cloves, minced1/3 balsamic vinegar1/3 cup chicken broth3 plum tomatoes, seeded and diced2 tablespoons capers Combine first 3 ingredients in a shallow dish; dredge pork chops in flour mixture.Cook pork chops in hot oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat 1 to 2 minutes on each side or until golden brown. Remove chops from skillet.Add garlic to skillet, and saute 1 minute. Add vinegar and broth, stirring to loosen particles from bottom of skillet; stir in tomatoes and capers. return pork chops to skillet; bring sauce to a boil. Cover, reduce hear, and simmer 4 to 5 minutes or until pork is done. Serve pork chops with tomato mixture. Yield: 4 servings. Per serving: Calories 321 (48% from fat); Fat 17.2 (sat 5.6g, mono 8.5g, poly 1.6g); Protein 28.6g; Carb 12.5g; Fiber 0.8g; Chol 82mg; Iron 1.8mg; Sodium 882mg; Calc 44mg

Same recipes as in the All New Ultimate 2006 Book !!

Although, I love Southern Living Cookbooks, I was quite disappointed that the same recipes in this book are the same as in the 2006 All New Ultimate Cookbook. The only difference I see is the binding, the cover , and the CD. I kept the 2008 book and gave away my All New Ultimate. I wish I had known this before I ordered a copy of each.

The Same Book...Retitled

This a great Southern Living cookbook as most, but I second what a previous reviewer said. If you are a loyalist who bought "The Ultimate Southern Living Cookbook", then you already have this one. While I have not gone page by page, it appears to be identical in content to the previous book...which is a real disappointment once you've pulled of the shrink wrap that covers this one.

    It's getting out of hand

    For 50 years this has been one of my primary reference works, and it still is. It's essential. But over the years, as knowledge has expanded and the book has expanded, the editors have had to make more and more hard choices about what to include and what to leave out. By now, so much is necessarily left out of a single-volume work that I find it less useful than I used to.
    For example, if I want to find out about the chemistry and toxicology of thorium compounds and the decay processes of thorium isotopes, the CRC handbook doesn't give me enough information to be useful; I must consult more specialized works. Similarly, if I'm interested in a chemical as widely used as hydrogen peroxide, I cannot find enough information here to help me determine the reactivity and hazards of aqueous solutions of hydrogen peroxide in various concentrations; this is essential information for anyone working with hydrogen peroxide in concentrations varying from 30% to 85%.
    Whether it's kept in a single-volume format or not, I will continue to regard this as an essential reference on my bookshelf, and every few years will buy an updated copy. However, I wish the editors would disentangle it into a series of more specialized volumes, to allow better treatment of much of the material.

    For most chemical applications, this book is an invaluable resource for accurate and complete physical data on most common reagents. While it is a bit irrelevant (and perhaps a bit costly) for home/casual use, it is absolutely essential in a lab/academic environment where such information is beneficial or a necessity on a day to day basis. Polished, neat, and comprehensive, it conveys an enormous amount of data in an understandable and easily looked up format.

    Dr. B.S. Dhillon is a Professor of Engineering Management in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Ottawa. He attended the University of Wales where he received a BS in electrical and electronic engineering and an MS in mechanical engineering. He received a Ph.D. in industrial engineering from the University of Windsor.

    He has served as a Chairman/Director of Mechanical Engineering Department/Engineering Management Program for over 10 years at the same institution. He has served as a consultant to various organizations and bodies and has many years of experience in the industrial sector. He has published over 320 articles on engineering management, reliability, safety, etc. He has been on the editorial boards of 8 international scientific journals. In addition, Dr. Dhillon has written 29 books on various aspects of engineering management, design, reliability, safety, and quality published by Wiley (1981), Van Nostrand (1982), Butterworth (1983), Marcel Dekker (1984), Pergamon (1986), etc. He has served as General Chairman of two international conferences on reliability and quality control held in Los Angeles and Paris in 1987.

    Easy read, good assessment of qualitative reliability tools

    Does not dive deeply into reliability theory and equations, but gives a good overview of reliability strategies (risk mitigation) as they apply to the Medical Device Field. The author has done a lot of research on, and has listed many examples of the impact that unreliability has caused within the medical field.

    Fun family projects made simple

    Great book for simple and fun family projects for your house and garden.
    The illustrated step-by-step instructions are easy to follow and makes the book a great guide for anyone interested in picking up a toolbox.
    You get a good mix of both useful (build a toy chest or a step stool) and fun (build a fort or a lemon stand) projects.
    The safety-guide in the beginning of the book is also a good read teaching not only kids, but adults, how to avoid unwanted accidents with the hammer.
    All in all - clear, simple and fun book for the kid in all of us!

    Great fun for the family

    My son got this book as a gift, and we've had a wonderful time putting the projects together as a family. Even though we are novice builders, the step-by-step instructions have made it easy for everyone to follow along. The wall cubbies we made look great in my daughter's room, and the soccer goal has made a fun addition to our backyard! My kids also love the colorful illustrations and bonus stories that come along with each project.

    If you buy Coastal living beach house style you will see that almost 75% of the photos are the same ones in their Coastal living Our best makeovers magazine 2010.
    I was so disappointed that so many of the photos were the same. I have a lot of old Coastal living issues and there were so many other photos they could have used. Maybe next time they will use some new material and not the same old photos just in a new book.

    Beach House Styles

    If you're looking for an overview of different signature beach house styles, this book is a good place to start. It surveys the most popular beach styles which are influenced by geography: the bold navy, whites and reds of New England, soft sand and blue tones in Seaside Florida, hot pinks, yellows and preppy greens in Key West Style, the Spanish/Mexican influences of Southern California, the moody-murky deeper tones of the Pacific Northwest and the tropical brights of the Caribbean.

    The book takes you room-by-room beginning with living rooms, and includes bedrooms, kitchens, baths and porches illustrating the possibilities and variations of beach decor. My favorite feature of this book is the "elements of style" page for each kind of room which shows common elements used. Different pieces are highlighted to demonstrate how a look can be put together for a particular room from chairs to side tables, to rugs, to fabric to accessories like lanterns.

    There were some rooms I loved, but others didn't look particularly "beachy" to me such as a Moroccan-influenced bedroom, a neo-classic master bedroom, and a lavender and green guest room which looked more farmhouse country to me. The most successful, and attractive, rooms in the book I thought brought more of the outdoors in and looked more "beachy". I don't subscribe to COASTAL LIVING magazine, although occasionally look at it at Barnes & Noble, and all of the rooms were new to me. If you have a subscription, you may have seen the rooms before, and want to take that into consideration. This is a fun and affordable introduction to a casual, inviting and comfortable vacation style which many want in our homes.

    great coffee table book?

    This book has a lot of beautiful pictures although most are split 3/4 across by the binding. If you receive Coastal Living magazine you may recognize most of featured houses. Great for a coffee table book or as a conversation piece for those of us who are landlocked. Overall.... for me this book was a bit of a let down.

    2012 & 2013 Cookbook

    2013 cookbook

    I am disappointed in this year and last years book. We do not like the black &white pictures. You can't tell what it is. Not appealing. I been buying 6 of these books every year since 1978, and this is the last ones I will buy unless you change it back to color pictures throughout. I'm sorry, I have really loved these books.

    Southern Love

    As another reviewer said, there are more black and white photos in this volume than most cookbooks have. It also seems that the weight of the paper used is less than previous volumes. Generally, cookbooks use heavier weight paper since this type of book has a harder life than, say, a copy of War and Peace. It's subjected to repetitive browsing, being held open with a wine bottle so the chef can read, an occasional flareup from being too close to the stove and an assortment of flour and baking spices embedded in it's spine.

    That being said, publishers use less color and thinner paper to keep costs down. And the Southern Living Annual Recipes 2013 book is less expensive than many, if not most, cookbooks.

    In our case, these annual editions replace the stack of Southern Living magazines that my wife collects every year. We have every annual cookbook dating back to 2000 - and the (currently) 13 annual books is much nicer than the equivalent 156 magazines would be. Using the indexes in each book, we can easily find what we're looking for.

    I only wish other magazines would take this annual recipe cookbook approach (yeah, I'm talking to you Bon Appetit - which we have every issue of dating back to 1993.). I would love to purge the magazine collection from our home in favor of annual cookbooks, or even a digital format.

    We're happy with this edition for what it is. An inexpensive and complete replacement for the years worth of magazines. While the quality could be better, it's "good enough" for the price and we'll keep buying them in upcoming years.

    About the Author
    Errol Flynn was an Australian-born American actor. He was known for his romantic swashbuckler roles in Hollywood films and his flamboyant lifestyle. After starring in Captain Blood (1935), Flynn became an overnight sensation, quickly becoming typecast as a swashbuckler and a rogue in a number of successive films. He followed Captain Blood with The Charge of the Light Brigade (1936), and after his appearance as Miles Hendon in The Prince and the Pauper (1937), he was cast in his most celebrated role as Robin Hood in The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) - his first film in Technicolor. He went on to appear in The Dawn Patrol (1938) with David Niven, Dodge City (1939), The Sea Hawk (1940) and Adventures of Don Juan (1948). Throughout the 1950s his health deteriorated due to heavy alcohol and drug abuse, and he died in 1959 of a heart attack. His autobiography, My Wicked, Wicked Ways was published posthumously later that year.

    Getting to Know Flynn

    Fun read! Not only do you get to learn about the life of one of Hollywood's most reknown actors of the Golden Age, but you get to feel as though you really knew Errol, for better or worse. Flynn's writing style is unabashedly forthright and funny as he covers a meer 50 years of life, and yet his escapades traveling the world before his days at Warner Brothers, are even more exciting than his adventures as beloved Robin Hood or Captain Peter Blood combined! Such a short life and yet, extremely well lived. Though he is cynical and critical of himself and others, Errol depicts a seemingly more truthful and genuine story than anything you'd ever read about him. Be aware, this is definitely a book aimed at a mature audience!

    By the end of this book, you'll see the man for what he was, his talents and his shortcomings, his successes and his failures. After hearing what he has to say, I hope you find you have the same level of respect for the life of Errol Flynn as I have come to have because of this autobiography.

    Side note: If you enjoy this book, check out "Showdown", a fictional novel written by Flynn that is a very similar retelling of his experiences as a young man in New Guinea!

    The Life of Errol Flynn Put to Paper - A Lesson in Writing about Yourself and Other Lessons to Learn

    I admit I read this five years, but I still have great memories of it. I have read many a biography and autobiography in my life, but this is the best and my favorite, bar none. Period. Whether it was because it was so well and vividly written, whether because of the man in question, or whether because it takes place on the Golden Age of Hollywood, or all of the above, this comes out at you in full force, honestly and straight-forward. The places Errol Flynn has been. The movies. The loves. The losses. All other biographies pale in comparison. This is the standard by which all other bios will be judged and will never measure up to. This is the only one I would reread, and you'll want to start over once you finish it.

    This guy is amazing!

    I didn't expect I would enjoy it as much as I did - after all, he was only a pretty faced action movie star.
    Flynn tends to come out on top, even at the expense of friends and lovers. So it's a good book to practice your suspension of disbelief and suspension of moral codes and ethics.
    A modern day Baron Munchausen.
