A good user manual for image processing

This book reads like a user manual for an engineering image processing toolkit. In fact, that is exactly what it is -- the author sells a companion CD that is a set of image processing plug-ins to PhotoShop. However, you will not need to buy his toolkit to find this book valuable. Any image processing package that you use will be of greater use to you if you have this book at your side. The important thing to realize is that this is a handbook for technical USERS. It is not a programming manual for how to implement the techniques it discusses, but a very high-quality discussion of what the techniques are and when and why you would use them. Within that domain, the book has remarkable depth and clarity. It is quite up-to-date in its coverage, and draws extensively from real-world applications in medicine, microscopy, and satellite imaging. If you need to develop image processing procedures in your work as an engineer, you will want to have this book by your side.

Excelent Handbook

If you are primarily interested in remote sensing aspects of image processing (e.g., satellite and airborne imagery of the ground). I recommend acquiring this handbook on image processing. By far the best handbook on general Image Processing is "The Image Processing Handbook" edited by Russ and published by the IEEE. I use this book all the time. Of course, if you are getting into specific areas, such as mapping, hyperspectral imagery, synthetic aperature radar imagery or photogrammetry (i.e., precise physical measurement from imagery), or if you have a specific application (such as deforestation or plant diseases or agriculture), you should consider separate books on those topics.

Nearly perfect

As others have stated, this book comes as close as you'll ever get to a single-source reference on image processing. But if I were ever going to shoot anything down in it, I'd say that a little more mathematical background on some topics (and maybe pseudocoded examples) would help. For example, in the satellite geometric correction section, only a very high level view is given yet this is a challenging topic that could use more depth. Geometric transformations in general could use more depth, e.g. camera calibrations or image warping/morphing/mapping to other projections for example. Another example would be the need for a little more depth on how to make slow algorithms fast ...like convolution multiplications for example. Sure, you could write out the multiplies and spot commonalities, then re-use results that appear in more than one subsequent equation and what not, but some exploration of matrix math and how to make it efficient would be nice. But again ...I'm picking at small things here, and if John's book covered everything that I'd like it to, then it would become 2 books, not one ...hey! Now THERE's an idea! A 2+ book set by John Russ that covers a broader range of topics and does so in greater depth! That's something that I'd pay for (and much better to read than Ballard & Brown)

This book basically has it all to help with a carb lover's diet. It explains how it is the right carbs, which will make you happy, fill you up and in turn will help you with your weight. The idea of resistant carbs is explained and there is a chart with the foods and portions. Carbs 101 gives you an indication of what you can eat, equipment for your kitchen is listed- really what most kitchens already have if you cook a lot. What your pantry, refrigerator, freezer should have in them are provided. There are recipe icons used in the book such as; kid-friendly, make ahead, low-sodium, super-fast and vegetarian. Nutritional information for each serving is included with every recipe...calories,fats, etc.

The recipes themselves consist of: breakfast, soups and sandwiches, pasta and pizza, seafood, meat and poultry, appetizers and cocktails, desserts and recipes from star chefs. Party and holiday menus, the diet plan, the 7 day kick start and the 21 day immersion plan as well as a list of what you can `grab and go' are all included.
Almost all the recipes have big colour pictures. Prep, cooking and total times are given. Tips are included throughout, such as directions how to make ahead. A metric equivalents chart, recipe and subject indexes are also presented.
This is a book for you as an individual, your family and even company. The recipes seem very appealing. Our family has especially enjoyed the pasta with peas, ham and parmesan cheese and the penne with sausage and spinach.

This is a great cookbook! Everything is so easy to prepare. I lost 20 lbs. on this plan and now know I will keep it off with all the great recipes in this book. I recommend Carb Lovers to everyone who is trying to lose weight.

great piece of literature

I was so excited to receive this book new and in hardcover cheaper than the paperbacks at the bookstore. this ancient tale is a fun read, I am happy to add it to my collection.
It is composed beautifully for any library it is a gem, though the picture wasn't what I received in the mail. In fact I was happier because it was a black cover and I think it looks better that way.

Another Beautifully Constructed Classic Piece to Add to a Formal Library

Another wonderful, well constructed, hardback book for my collection. Whenever I review hardbacks, I always state that I purchase only classics in hardback and that I still own a Kindle. Easy to read letters that are large and dark, but not too large. I do like that. Fun book to read in the evenings before bed to get your mind off things. Not a large book, but one that teaches life lessons. I don't think I would have wanted to be close to Gilgamesh as he seemed like the typical, restless showoff, yet he is a timeless historical figure nonetheless.

1000 years older than Genesis. Unbelievable! This book has a great introduction and is high quality. I highlight throughout mine and it doesn't bleed through the pages. I also found an audio book on youtube that is almost word for word.. which makes for a great additional resource.

I had borrowed this book from a friend and after testing it out, I had to purchase my own copy. Lots of tasty, easy to make recipes. Also has suggestions for meals. I am not part of weight watchers program but like all the low cal recipes this book offers. Quick to prepare.

Good, but should have been edited

I just started developing InfoSec policies for my company, and was having a hard time getting started. The Web is filled with sample documents and articles for specific documents, but I needed a resource that assumed I was starting from scratch and would help me build up a good library of content to satisfy our auditors.

So I was a little excited to stumble across this book. It lays a good foundation for what's needed in a security policy library, and steps through the development of the major document types: policies, procedures, standards, and guidelines. It's filled with lots of samples, checklists, templates, and other starting points for everything I was looking for.

One glaring problem, though, which by itself drops the rating 1-2 stars: there is an embarrasingly high number of grammar, syntax, and occassionally even semantic, mistakes. Even though these kind of problems are one of my biggest pet peeves, I might overlook them ... except the author makes multiple statements about proofreading your work before submitting to management!! It seems pretty clear that the book was rushed to publication without a serious round of review (I wonder if I put more editorial time into this review than they did into the book...). Even though the book was written for techno-types, there is no excuse for such egregious errors.

Overall, though, this is a decent resource to help with infosec policy development. Just make sure it's not the only book you use. If they would issue an update, this would become a valuable addition to your library. However, the edition I purchased in Feb 2005 was released in 2002, so I wouldn't expect any updates soon.

Excellent practical guidebook

This is the best book I've seen (so far!) about writing infosec policies and associated materials. Tom Peltier refers directly to the ISO 17799 structure and gives helpful advice on what to include under the ten sections. More than that, he guides the reader through the *process* of writing and implementing policies, even including a brief chapter on my own specialism, security awareness, and suggestions on writing style.
My main quibble with the book is its inconsistency in the level of detail e.g. 41 of the 191 main text pages are devoted to information classification. There are perhaps too many lists and tables for my liking, but these may be useful as reminders of things to include.
Overall, the book is helpful if you are about to write infosec policies and want to avoid some of the more common pitfalls.

Good book for Infosec Management

If you want to find out the relation between Policies, Procedures and Standards buy this book. Although the flow of text is somewhat discontinuous but the author clearly explains the underlying concepts. The examples are very illustrative and have a real world feel. The author has been on the frontlines (clearly evident throughout the text) and this distinguishes the book from rest in the pack. Very few books talk about ISO 17799 and BS7799 in detail. This book goes beyond just reproducing the standard and explains the positioning of such guidelines. The tables and checklists found in the appendices alone are worth many times the cost of the book.

Finally, a slow cooker cookbook without cream of anything!

I love the idea of a slow cooker, but am constantly frustrated with recipes that call for cream of chicken soup and leave my family eating mushy, under-flavored meals.

Slow Cooker Quick Fixes uses fresh ingredients, and offers complete menu offerings that take less than five more minutes to put together. I've made six recipes out of this book so far, and have planned next week's menu just from this book and Quick Fixes with Mixes, another joy-to-cook-from collection from Southern Living.

This would make an excellent gift for someone who is just getting started on their own, or someone who has had a slow cooker tucked away for years in the back of a cupboard...because they never found the right collection of recipes!

Great Find!

I have over 200 cookbook titles, and I own several different books on cooking with a slow cooker. I especially enjoy the visual look of this text. The author takes what can seem a boring, out of date method of cooking and makes it highly approachable. The book is very user friendly; experts and newbies will find something they can learn and try. Love the approach to menus! Companion (non-slow cooked) recipes appear in several places throughout the book to help the reader construct a fabulous, relatively simple prep meal. I have marked more recipes to try than EVER before when first getting a book on slow cooking. Great book and a fun approach to an old-fashioned, economic way of cooking! You'll WANT to get into your kitchen and give the recipes a whirl. Break out your Crock Pot®! This one's a keeper!

Great for a beginning Crock Pot user

I bought this book and a crock pot for my son for his birthday. He's never used one before, so this cook book was given to help give him ideas. The cook book is wonderful in that not only does it have the recipe with pictures, it provides a grocery list for each meal you are preparing. It's terrific for someone just starting out cooking with a crock pot. The first recipe my son made in this was a fancy poached salmon dish. He said it was delicious!

After receiving this wonderful book as a gift, I purchased several copies to give to my close friends for Christmas. We talk about what was on Oprah frequently, and this book has the best of the best. Beautiful photographs, and a balanced array of topics are included!

VALUABLE TREASURY

Oprah's midas touch is evident on every page of this magazine. Words of wisdom abound in this 336-paged self-discovery book. Needless to say that if properly applied, they could be all you need in order to maintain a well-balanced physical and emotional lifestyle. Daily issues like: health, inspiration, confidence, happiness, success, family, spirituality, and ambition were given first-class treatment. All you need to do is to sit back and read things for yourself.
No single book caters for all the desires of the human heart, but this one's really worth your time (and money). Its narrations are cogent and compelling; and the same applies to its witty and exuberant style. The contents are unisex: not just for ladies! So, as many folks wind-up the 'old' year in order to turn a fresh slate, this could (as well) be a good way to support any resolutions that one might be planning for the new year. It is indeed a good piece to relax with. A valuable treasury of wisdom and advice: be it night or day! All the very best!!

Worth it!!!

This magazine covers it all. There are articles on relationships, on diet, on money, and so on and on and on. It really is what Oprah says it is....living your best life.

Some of the articles that I liked were the one by Suze Orman, the money expert, who offers some good advice.

There's also some good ideas by Dr. Phil.

THinking about all the problems i deal with on a daily basis, this book offers advice to deal with just about all of it. From how to keep myself organized, to energized, to keeping my relationships in good order, it's a great resource.

It's a lot of info. Each article is wwell-written but its a lot of articles. That's what makes this book good though in my opinion because there is a lot of information and you can get a lot out of it.

I admire Oprah and the energy and spirituality she brings to the work that she does. This magazine has that, and she has a lot of inspriational articles.
