Not up to ususal standards

Most disappointed in this edition of Christmas w/Southern Living. The crafts/decorating tips are for the most part outdated and did not hold appeal for me. The recipes are the most disappointing. It wasn't the ingredients or degree of difficulty, but the printing. The font size is somewhere between a 6 or 8. This book is not user friendly at all. I have good eyesight, but strain to read the ingredients and then cooking directions with the tiny print, made more difficult by using a busy background on each page. I am returning my book and recommend that anyone who has been in the habit of automatically ordering this series each year, find one to look through before purchasing.

Good and Bad

I'm in complete agreement with another 3-star reviewer. I want opulence: photos of gorgeously decorated, beautiful southern homes, decorating ideas that are inspirational, unique, and explained well enough so that I can replicate them, and of course, mouth-watering recipes that are true to the south. (I was born, raised and still live in the northern US, but my heart's in the south & I do have family down there). I only discovered CWSL about 5 years ago, but in that time, I've collected them from 1995 through 2013. (Prior to 1995, they were so outdated as to be ridiculous). My absolute FAVORITES are from 1999 to 2009. All of these were edited by Rebecca Brennan and are simply glorious! CWSL 2010 was the last to be edited by Brennan, and was clearly a segue into a considerably more modern presentation. Since Brennan stepped down as editor, I haven't been as impressed with these books. In 2011 and 2012, they really plummeted downhill, and I nearly gave up collecting them altogether, but I decided to take a chance on 2013.

2013 is definitely an improvement on 2011 & 2012, but I still have some issues with it. First of all, I would like to see photos of a few more of the dishes in the recipe sections, and EVERY photo of food, drinks or dessert should be LABELED, so that we instantly know what we're looking at. Failure to label recipe photos is utter laziness. The font size for the recipes should be larger and easier to read. I'd appreciate recipes that are authentically southern, delicious, and not a hardship to shop or prepare. The trendier ingredients and super-lengthy ingredient lists are a turn-off. I want decorating, craft and gift wrapping ideas that are both doable AND elegant. I actually loved the way real fruit, flowers and greenery were used in Brennan's offerings. I have to wonder if the new editor really thinks she's performing a service by downgrading to cheaper and cheezier looks, or if she's succumbed to a type of political correctness that seeks to steer us away from opulence. Either way, I can seek out bargains on my own. When I purchase these books, I want the bang for my buck. Give me the elegance and let me decide what I want to do with it.

For me, CWSL wasn't as much a guide to be used solely at Christmastime, but something I could curl up with, along with a cup of tea, any time of year, and whenever I desired to be inspired or whisked away by my imagination. Unfortunately, CWSL is currently trending downward into just another boring, modern Christmas guidebook. The southern charm continues to fade. However, like I said, this one (2013) is better than 2011 and 2012. Anyone who is new to CWSL, and not quite the stickler that I am, will like this.

Every Year - only gets better!

I always buy the new edition, every year. This kicks off my inspirations for the upcoming holiday season. Great ideas, recipes, and it is very nice to peruse over and over again.

I do not have issues with the text size, nor the font chosen by the publishers, however, if you do not like the use of white ink on any of the actual darker photography within pages, if you are fussy about Helvetia vs Tacoma, or would prefer a giant typeface, then this may be one to look through at a brick and mortar, prior to purchase.

My fault for buying the wrong book

The pictures are gorgeous and the instructions are clear and straightforward. The 'one page per recipe' approach and overall clean layout make this book easy to use in the kitchen.

Having said that, I mistakenly made the assumption that it was geared towards dutch ovens (it's not) and that the end result would be a complete meal (only a small subset of the recipes qualify for this). I do not fault the author or publisher in the least as it is my fault for not bothering to click the "look inside" link.

I purchased Glorious One-Pot Meals: A Revolutionary New Quick and Healthy Approach to Dutch-Oven Cooking at the same time and am happy to say it meets the criteria of "one pot meals".

I don't want to discourage anyone, this is probably a great cookbook, but it's not what I was looking for.

My Favorite Cookbook

I got this book as an impulse buy after I found a Le Creuset on deep discount and didn't know what to make in it. I have tried most of the recipes and all have been good. Recipes from this book now make up about a fourth of our weeknight rotation. We love the Gumbo, Halibut with Leeks and Tomatoes, Spiced Chicken and Rice, and Baked Sausages and Beans.

Republished 2nd edition of this FBI agent's text book reveals major contradictions relative to Simpson case.

What is great about this republished 2nd edition of this FBI agent's college text book is that he only includes one significant chapter of interest and that is chapter 15 the OJ Simpson chapter. In it he tells on himself by revealing something vital that passed right over virtually everyone's head who watched his testimony during the so called "trial of the century". That is the shoes soles on the alleged Bruno Magli shoes that made the bloody prints within the side walk tiles at the murder site of Nicole Brown Simpson's residence came from a subcontracting company entitled SILGA GOMMA and from its U2887 rubber shoe sole mold. This was made clear, but what was not clear is that when SILGA sold them to BRUNO MAGLI to be attached to the bottom of two of its shoe models, these same shoes soles from the U2887 mold were provided to 20 other shoe brands as well. Whether it was clear to the public or not that the raised heel on the shoe sole prevents the identification of the shoe from touching the ground is unknown. However, what is clear is that it would have been virtually impossible for this FBI agent to single out a Bruno Magli foot print in blood with this shoe sole from any of the other 20 brands carrying the same shoe sole. When combined with the fact that Simpson's foot as shown in another book THE PEOPLE VS OJ SIMPSON by another investigator T.H. Johnson, that OJ Simpson's foot is much larger and extends well beyond the perimeter of the alleged Bruno Magli shoe sole discovered by the FBI, it now raises doubts about the credibility of the photos allegedly showing Simpson wearing Bruno Magli shoes. The second author of THE PEOPLE VS OJ SIMPSON, Johnson, does not reject the possibility that Simpson may have owned a pair of the infamous shoes, but claims that the size of the tracing of the foot received from the incarcerated Simpson overlaid on top of the size 12 U2887 SILGA shoe sole, clearly indicates, as with the gloves, that Simpson's foot was much too large to fit in any shoe carrying that particular size 12, SILGA U2887 shoe sole. Johnson challenges the use of the abstract acronym we often use called "size". "That is not a clearly definitive term" Johnson says, "and the FBI agent , Boziak made a terrible mistake in not going to the jail and measuring the actual dimensions of Simpson's foot". "Now he's got to live with that major mistake because we at OMIG stand by our findings that Simpson's foot hangs over the size 12 shoe sole from SILGA on 4 locations".

The purpose of this work is unclear

This book isn't all that pocket-sized, nor is it well indexed. It has mostly the same recipes found in the 'non-pocket sized' book. As a companion to the main guide, I don't see that this is worth the cost. As a stand-alone guide, it's not bad. I do question its effectiveness, though. There's less explanation of menu choices, but I give it 3 stars for lush photography and clear preparation directions.

What would have bumped it up to 5 stars? Editor/author take note: (1) Ways/means/tables that summarize how to make more meals fit in with this eating plan; (2) more snacks; (3) more clarity in the 'how to dine out' guide. I'm an easterner and don't recognize many of the restaurants or their menu recommendations. But this whole plan raises questions: Just what is with this notion that green bananas are 'resistant' starches? Should we go a step further and eat uncooked plantains? (and any of you who write a diet plan centered around plantains, I thought of it first and demand a percentage of the royalties! ;0)

I liked the sprinkling of success stories, but didn't get the sense this diet actually works well. Weight loss was modest and believable. The before and after pix did not impress with any appearance of fat loss. This is a lovely guide book, with tempting recipes and ideas. Do they work? I suspect they work about as well as any other concerted effort to lose a little weight. There are several weeks of menus, but I imagine the restrictions become as boring as those on most other diets after a month or so. Is this set worth the money? I don't believe so. It's just another entry in the 'get-rich-quick-on-the-weight-loss-craze-of-the-month' lottery. I'm not convinced the weight stays off or that people stay on this fad diet.

It might work with younger metabolisms, but then so will most any diet. For the over-40 or over-50 woman living on a weight loss plateau, I'd recommend something a bit more aggressive, such as the glycemic index (Zone) diet. Not an easy meal plan, it is very effective and easier to maintain in the long run.

Complete Plan for Success

My friend told me about this plan and I am so grateful. I am busy and on the go and don't always have time to cook, but the plan give me so many on the go options that I can easily fit into my schedule. The variety of items that are offered are also great. I have alreay lost 1.5 pounds within 2nd day and I am over 50. I look forward to getting my energy back. My best friend has decided to join me on the plan. The pocket guide is great and easy to use. The picutres are wonderful and really make you want to try the recipes so far they have been tasty and filling. The excerise outline is great as well.

This is a fine and entertaining book of short pieces by a well-known baseball writer of the early 20th century. The anecdotes are sharp and funny, and the collection will be appreciated by anyone who loves baseball history. The chapter on Babe Ruth is quite good, and it has been quoted from in some of the Ruth biographies.

Of all the literary genres, humor has the shortest shelf life--except for Archy and Mehitabel, that is. First published in 1916, it is a classic of American literature. Archy is a cockroach, inside whom resides the soul of a free-verse poet; he communicates with Don Marquis by leaping upon the keys of the columnist's typewriter. In poems of varying length, Archy pithily describes his wee world, the main fixture of which is Mehitabel, a devil-may-care alley cat.

Archy music will linger in your head long after you finish the book. Here's a tiny taste from his interview with a mummy:

says he"

Writers (particularly journalists) can go lifetimes without attaining such loose-limbed grace. And the illustrations by George Herriman ("Krazy Kat") provide the perfect counterpoint. On top of all that, Marquis did the impossible: he made a cockroach loveable.

Collection of humorous stories by Don Marquis, originally published from 1916 in Marquis's newspaper columns "The Sun Dial" in the New York Evening Sun and "The Lantern" in the New York Herald Tribune and published in book form in 1927. The stories center on Archy, a philosophical cockroach who types messages to the author in lowercase letters (being unable to activate the shift mechanism), and Mehitabel, a free-spirited alley cat whose motto is "toujours gai." After initial publication, the work and its sequels were usually published without capital letters. Archy and Mehitabel consists mostly of free-verse poems on such concerns of Archy's as transmigration of souls, social injustice, life in New York City, and death. Sequels included Archys Life of Mehitabel (1933) and Archy Does His Part (1935), both of which were included in the lives and times of archy and mehitabel (1940; illustrated by George Herriman), a posthumously published compendium of the previous books. --The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature

One of My All-Time Favorites

This is one of my favorite books by one of my favorite writers. The two main characters, Archy and Mehitabel, dispense wisdom comments that are applicable to the world now even though they were written in the early 1900's. Don Marquis was an astute observer of people and the world and his views are valid today. I have this book in hard copy as well as Kindle format. George Herriman's drawings are priceless and add to the charm of the stories. I got my original copy of "archy and mehitabel" when I was a newlywed (many years ago) and it and the other books that comprise "the lives and times of archy and mehitabel" have become my go-to book, In fact, I own a black cat and named her Mehitabel.

I would give this six stars, no seven, no ten...

I was just remembering having read some Archy and Mehitabel in junior high, and coming back to these poetic gems is a treat. The fun of getting into the mind of a little cockroach and his cohorts is a stress reliever, and the concept of a bug who cannot type punctuation or caps keeps you attention.

once upon a cockroach....

Don Marquis created archy the cockroach, who calls himself a vers libre poet, and his friend mehitabel, the fertile alleycat, in the 1920s and '30s, when the economic situation was as grim as ours is now. The short archy essays ran for years in a major big-city newspaper (I forget which one...Chicago, I believe), and were beloved for their subtle humor and sharp satire. Because he's a cockroach, at home alone in the nighttime newspaper office, archy has typewriters at his disposal, but no way to type, other than hurling himself head down upon each key. Thus, his poetry has no punctuation and no capital letters, but it is grand poetry nonetheless.
As a longtime fan of fine humor, I regard this small book, and its sequels, as valuable gems. They make superb gifts for anyone with a philosophical bent and a sense of humor.
